What We’re Reading

There is no question that the healthcare field is in currently in turmoil, with multiple attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and political uncertainty regarding government-funded healthcare, so we were pleased to spot this article on the Medical Economics website, “Top 10 Challenges Facing Physicians in 2018.”[1]  It offers a reader-generated list of the administrative and procedural burdens physicians are encountering in this current iteration of the healthcare industry. The authors analyze these challenges and offer some practical advice to avoid professional burnout.

Unsurprisingly, the common theme throughout the list is “not enough time.” Byzantine government regulations and rising health costs make it increasingly difficult for physicians to focus on what they love—the practice of medicine—because they are saddled with administrative duties.

The good news is that many of these obstacles, such as the increase in uncompensated tasks, time demands of EHR data entry, and a growing patient disrespect toward physicians who are too busy to get to know their patients can be avoided in a concierge practice. With smaller patient panels, concierge physicians can more easily incorporate the practical solutions the authors provide and get back to doing what they’ve spent years training for: practicing medicine.
